TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In the midst of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s bustle on the capital city move from Jakarta to East Kalimantan, Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri reminds the president to also have a plan for Jakarta’s future.
“Whether it would be turned into an economic hub or trading city, that must be studied first, either administratively, theoretically, and also its execution in the field,” said Megawati in a written release on Wednesday night, August 28.
The fifth Indonesian President then recalled the time she took office as the country’s leader where she found out a report at the time suggesting that by 2025 Jakarta will no longer have sufficient infrastructure to accommodate the number of vehicles.
“These essential and strategic elements need to be studied, mere words are not enough,” said Megawati.
Megawati suggests President Jokowi form a dedicated team tasked to determine Jakarta’s future, as she also implied Jakarta is turning to be an overcrowded city and urgently needs restoring in many sectors.
